For Flora, Mississippi native Aaliyah Myles, graduating from Alcorn State University with a bachelor’s degree in human development and family science is the first step toward her dream of becoming a social worker.

Once Myles becomes an Alcorn alumna after the university’s Spring 2026 Commencement on May 9, 2026, a new journey begins, as she was accepted into Jackson State University’s Master of Social Work program. Myles is set to begin her studies later this year.

Years ago, Myles realized she loved serving others, with an emphasis on empowering and caring for youth.

“My lifelong love for children and making a difference in their lives piqued my interest in social work,” said Myles. “I’ve always enjoyed working in roles where I could support and care for the youth. Over time, I gained experience working in daycare settings, nurturing, teaching, and guiding children during their early development. These experiences helped me realize how impactful a supportive and stable environment can be for a child’s growth.”

Getting those firsthand experiences helped Myles gain exposure to the professional side of the field. She furthered her knowledge during an internship at the Southern Poverty Law Center, where she worked on a project aimed at creating pathways for children and families to escape poverty and build a better future.

“This experience allowed me to explore issues affecting underserved communities and develop a presentation and advocacy plan aimed at addressing poverty-related challenges. Through this work, I strengthened my passion for social work and gained a deeper understanding of the importance of advocacy, policy, and community support.”

Giving back and being a light for others is what Myles enjoys most about the profession.

“I find joy in giving back to my community, whether it’s by donating clothes, shoes, or anything I can to help others. Giving back is fulfilling because I get to serve others and create positive change. It all comes back to social work and making a meaningful impact on people’s lives. I appreciate that this field allows me to connect with people on a personal level, advocate for the voiceless, and contribute to building stronger communities.”

Myles’s passion followed her to Alcorn, where she began taking classes and building her knowledge.

“My Alcorn classes gave me valuable insights into the field. The coursework challenged me to think critically about social issues, understand human behavior, and explore effective ways to support others.”

Myles applauds her Alcorn professors and mentors for their encouragement and expertise in helping her to reach a new level.

“My professors and mentors were incredibly supportive, kind, and dedicated to helping students succeed. Through their teaching, mentorship, and real-world perspectives, they helped me better understand the responsibilities and impact of the profession. Their encouragement motivated me to continue pursuing this path and to strive for excellence. I would especially like to thank Dr. Marta Ravola, Dr. Muhammad Riaz, and La’Tasha Coleman for their support and guidance throughout my journey.”

Jackson State awaits Myles and the training that Alcorn has given her. She is excited to step into a new era of learning.

“I’m most looking forward to new experiences, meeting new people, and expanding my knowledge in this field. I’m excited to deepen my understanding of social work practices and gain the skills needed to make a lasting impact.”

Continuing her education at another HBCU was a determining factor in Myles’s decision to choose Jackson State.

“I believe that Jackson State’s Master of Social Work program fits me the best because it’s an HBCU that values culture, community, and academic excellence. Being part of another HBCU environment is important to me, as it provides a sense of belonging and support while also preparing me to serve diverse communities effectively.”

With graduation approaching, Myles is closing the Alcorn chapter of her story. She’s grateful for her time at the university.

“My experience has been amazing. I’ve enjoyed every moment, and I’m grateful for all the opportunities, lessons, and relationships that I have gained.”

Crossing the purple and gold finish line makes Myles the latest member of her family’s Brave chain.

“Completing my degree at Alcorn feels rewarding. Alcorn is a family tradition for me, as my parents, siblings, and many of my other family members graduated from here. The legacy runs deep and continuing that tradition means so much.”

As Myles prepares to depart this phase, she leaves a message for prospective students.

“Alcorn is a place where you will be supported, challenged, and inspired. It is a community that truly cares about your growth and success. If you are looking for a university that feels like home and helps you achieve your goals, Alcorn is the place to be.”
