Alumnus Col. Timothy W. Holman ’92 will speak during Spring Commencement
A successful U.S. Army professional and Alcorn State University alumnus will address the spring class of 2021 during their graduation ceremony. Col. Timothy W. Holman will give the keynote speech during Alcorn’s Commencement Exercise Saturday, May 8, at Jack Spinks – Marino Casem Stadium.
Holman currently serves as a transitioning engineer and diversity officer for the U. S. Army. In his career, Holman has served as the chief for the Army House Liaison Division (House of Representatives), chief of staff, and chief executive officer (engineer brigade commander). He also served as senior executive manager (engineer battalion commander) and strategic planner (Homeland Defense and Continuity of Operations and Government officer). He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics secondary education from Alcorn in 1992.
Holman feels honored to come back and speak to the next generation of Alcornite alumni.
“I love my alma mater,” said Holman. “Also, it’s the 150th anniversary, so I’m honored to speak, especially considering the list of very important people who have served as speakers in previous years.”
As he reflected on his Alcorn education, he spoke highly of the training he received while a student. He said that those lessons have been a driving force to his success in the military.
“I often used what I learned as a mathematics secondary education major as an engineer officer and commander. Obviously, as an engineer officer, calculations and mathematic problems were a part of my daily job. What I learned from geometry and other mathematics classes has helped me plan and execute complex engineering operations. What surprised me was how much I used the psychology I studied at Alcorn in leadership positions in the Army. What I learned about studying people and how they learn and function allowed me to maximize the potential of the soldiers and civilians.”
