Dr. Charlie Bridges selected to give keynote speech at 2018 Fall Commencement

One of Alcorn State University's faithful alumni will address the University's newest graduates during commencement.

Dr. Charlie Bridges, former president of the Louisiana State Urological Society and current board member of the Alcorn State University Foundation, Inc., will give the keynote speech at Alcorn's 2018 Fall Commencement Friday, Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. in the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex.

Bridges looks forward to returning to the university that laid the foundation for his career in medicine.

"I consider it an honor to be invited by my alma mater to deliver the commencement address," said Bridges. "Alcorn gave me such an incredible start to my medical profession. I am happy and honored to address the fall class of 2018."

Bridges graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Alcorn in 1974. He continued his education at the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he earned a medical degree.

Bridges is certified by the American Board of Urology. He has active hospital privileges at Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Baton Rouge General Medical Center where he has served as chief of Urology. He is presently the chief of Urology at Lallie Kemp Community Hospital in Independence, Louisiana.

Bridges is a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the U.S. Army. From 1983 to 1987, he served as chief of Urology at Blanchfield Army Hospital and has been in private practice in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for over thirty years.

Interim President, Dr. Donzell Lee is pleased with this year's commencement speaker. He believes that Bridges' success in his career makes him an ideal candidate to inspire the graduates.

"By way of his medical practice, military service, and leadership in the practice of medicine, Dr. Bridges has become the quintessential Alcornite," said Lee. "He has used the knowledge he gained at Alcorn to enhance the character of communities, clinics, clients, and our country."
