Student Government Association wins two awards at 4th annual Tailor Made Retreat

Two Student Government Association (SGA) members from Alcorn State University were recognized for their leadership abilities.

SGA President, Robert Tatum Jr. won the Most Impressive SGA President Award and Senior Class President, Casey Larry took home the Most Spirited Leader Award at the 4th annual Tailor Made Royal Retreat Thursday, July 12 through Sunday, July 15 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Retreat's mission is to equip, empower, and inspire campus kings, queens, and student leaders with valuable leadership skills that will benefit them during their reign, term, and beyond. Tatum and Larry, along with other members of Alcorn's SGA, learned important leadership values such as how to properly conduct a meeting, responding to media in a time of crisis, teambuilding exercises, and operating numerous roles within SGA. The students also volunteered at the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

Being honored as an impressive leader gives Tatum the drive to succeed as SGA president. He looks forward to having a good year with his colleagues.

"It was nothing short of humbling," said Tatum. "I worked with amazing SGA presidents, members, and royal court members throughout the week, and to have been such a standout that they thought I was deserving of this award inspired me. Winning the award gave me even more confidence for the upcoming year, and I cannot wait to work with my fellow SGA cabinet members."

For Larry, being a good representative for Alcorn was a priority. He's proud to have displayed excellence at the event.

"When they called my name for the award, I felt honored, not only for myself but for my Alcorn family as well," said Larry. "It was important going into this conference to make sure that I did my best to represent the university well."
