Saturday Science Academy seeks judges for 16th annual Science and Engineering Fair

Finding judges who are well versed in the scientific field is a top priority for Alcorn State University’s Saturday Science Academy.

The Academy is seeking judges for the 16th annual Science and Engineering Fair Saturday, Jan. 28 in the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium. Students who participate in the science fair will display and present independent science and mathematic experiments. Students who place in the competition will earn a chance to compete in the local, regional and state competitions.

Mary Trimble, director of the Saturday Science Academy, explained the qualities she’s looking for in a good judge.

“We’re looking for judges who convey fairness,” said Trimble. “ We want judges who listen to the students’ project explanation and can provide helpful and encouraging feedback to the student.”

Trimble hopes that the judges can motivate the students to enhance their scientific and research skills.

“A judge’s input will give students feedback on their projects so that they can clearly portray and explain future projects and results. It will also provide students the opportunity to enhance their public speaking skills when using scientific jargon. It will help students enhance research skills by encouraging them to conduct more experimentation to verify possible new conclusions.”
