Alcorn’s first Complete 2 Compete Initiative participants set to graduate

Two returning students at Alcorn State University are now eligible for graduation thanks to an initiative created to aid those who have earned college credits.

Mary Patrice Bell Burns and Adrian Reddix are set to earn their college degrees through the Complete 2 Compete initiative, which is a statewide program designed to help Mississippi adults who have earned college credit, but didn’t complete a degree program, better their lives by earning a college education.

Alcorn’s Office of Student Records coordinates the statewide initiative for the university. LaToyia Smith, who serves as the university’s Complete 2 Compete coach, works with students to ensure a clear understanding of their path to earning an Alcorn degree. Smith’s responsibility is to maintain consistent contact with Complete 2 Compete students to inform them of the resources that are available.

“I call, text, e-mail and have meetings with students at nights and during the weekend – whatever it takes- to make sure the students have academic coaching, support and resources they need to succeed,” said Smith.

Dr. John Igwebuike, who serves as the Complete 2 Compete coordinator for Alcorn, appreciates the new avenue for students to excel.

“I am pleased that President Alfred Rankins Jr. and Provost Donzell Lee have agreed to use some of the state allocated funds for need-based scholarships to help our former students return and complete degrees,” said Igwebuike. “The initiative is critical to expanding our alumni base, augmenting the state’s intellectual capacity and building our nation's creative and economic tax base.”
