Jeworski Mallett awarded the Excellence in State Government Award
An Alcorn State University alumnus was honored by Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves for his government leadership.
Jeworski Mallett, who earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2001, was recently presented the Excellence in State Government Award. Mallet serves as a deputy commissioner of Institutions for the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Since joining MDOC over 20 years ago, Mallett has held several positions that include an assignment to the Mississippi State Penitentiary's maximum-security cellblock and the director of Records. He was recently promoted to his current position of deputy commissioner of Institutions.
The Excellence in Government Awards ceremony for Mississippi was established in 2012 by the Mississippi State Personnel Board to recognize state employees who’ve exemplified innovation in public administration at state and local levels and demonstrated their commitment to public work.
The honor is special for Mallet because this is his agency’s first major award. He’s proud to represent his agency for their collective good work.
“Winning this award means a lot to me because I’ve worked for the Mississippi Department of Corrections for many years, and this is the first time any employee from the agency has won this award,” said Mallett. “I’m motivated by being able to have a positive impact on the lives of others. I’m a self-motivated, get it out of the mud type of guy. It felt great to be recognized by the governor for doing a thankless job in the law enforcement community."
Thanks to the opportunities Alcorn presented Mallet, he was well-equipped for his career in government.
“Alcorn is unique, and it taught me how to be cordial and get along with others. I learned to think win/win at Alcorn and how to listen to others. Alcorn created networking opportunities that I will have for a lifetime.”
In the future, Mallett plans to continue his service to the community. Most importantly, he plans to continue to be an asset to the development of his people.
“I plan to continue working with the agency to transition it into one of the model correctional/rehabilitative agencies in the country. When I retire from state service, I plan to focus on consulting and running a small business in or around Mound Bayou, Mississippi.”
