Alcorn adds veteran services officer

In collaboration with the Mississippi Veterans Affairs office, Alcorn State University recently established a veteran services officer position on the Alcorn campus.

Teddy Reed, Mississippi State Veteran Affairs outreach director, selected Dewayne Gill to join the Alcorn State team in this vital role.

"I am delighted to welcome Mr. Gill on board,” said Dr. Felecia M. Nave, president of Alcorn State University. “We look forward to the impactful work that he will do while serving our heroes in the regional area.”

In his new role, Gill will be responsible for assisting potential and current student-veterans and local community veterans in various ways, including advising and educating individuals and groups on available benefits from federal, state, and county resources. He will work with eligible veterans, family members, and survivors to process Veterans Affairs claims, including — compensation and pension, health care, education, employment, burial & survivor, housing, transportation, and military records.

"I am very excited about serving the student-veterans here on campus and within the community and will provide them with the best customer service possible," said Gill. "Each veteran has earned my sincere gratitude, and I am honored to help them in any way I can."

Gill is a native of Natchez, Miss., and a retired United States Navy veteran with more than 20-years' of service.
