Alcorn State Provides Invaluable Economic Impact to Mississippi, Southwest Mississippi Region
Alcorn State University added $97.9 million in income to the Southwest Mississippi River Region 1 economy according to its latest economic impact study by EMSI, a leading labor market data company. This value is approximately equal to 0.4% of the region’s total gross regional product (GRP).
“We are committed, not only to our students but to our region and our state,” said Dr. Felecia M. Nave, president of Alcorn State University. “Our position in history, and our location in the state of Mississippi, come with a welcomed responsibility for those we serve.”
Expressed in terms of jobs supported, Alcorn’s impact supported 1,706 regional jobs. This impact would not have been generated without the university’s presence in the Southwest Mississippi River Region.
Alcorn generates more tax revenue than it takes. For every dollar of public money invested in Alcorn State University, taxpayers will receive a cumulative value of $1.50 throughout students’ working lives. “Our strategic plan ensures we focus on initiatives that will continue to increase our impact each year,” Nave said.
The university benefits regional businesses by increasing consumer spending in the region and supplying a steady flow of qualified, trained workers to the workforce. Alcorn’s existence aids in creating a more prosperous economy, making Mississippi a more attractive place to live, work, and play by improving its quality of life.
Alcorn influences both the lives of its students and the regional economy. The university supports a variety of industries in the Southwest Mississippi River Region, serves regional businesses, and benefits Mississippi society as a whole with an expanded economy and improved quality of life. The benefits created by Alcorn even extend to the state and local government through increased tax revenues and public sector savings.
As part of fulfilling its land-grant university mission of education, research, and extension for the state of Mississippi, Alcorn State University creates a significant positive impact on the state while simultaneously generating a return on investment to its major stakeholder groups—students, taxpayers, and society.
