Senior Alexus Peters set to begin career at Meta
HBCU representation by way of Alcorn State University is headed to the biggest social media platform in the world.
Graduating senior Alexus Peters, who will earn a bachelor's degree in psychology during Saturday's 2022 Spring Commencement, accepted a social media specialist position with Meta, formally known as Facebook. Peters' job is in Austin, Texas.
Peters, a Lake Charles, Louisiana native, is responsible for helping to scale the company's support for Facebook's advertising clients, commerce sellers, page and group administrators, medial companies/publishers, gaming creators, and political advertisers that need help with advertising products.
The opportunity to work for the social media giant is huge for Peters. She's proud to work for Meta and represent an HBCU.
"It feels surreal to work for one of the world's biggest organizations, but being an HBCU graduate makes me feel even better," said Peters.
The company's outlook for the future attracted Peters to the position. She's happy to work for a company that allows her to grow as a professional.
"Meta is one of the fastest-growing organizations ever. Becoming a part of this company has given me a chance to grow and positions me to be innovative while creating diversity."
Peters also hopes to lead the charge in inspiring more black people, especially women, to pursue jobs in the social media field.
"I am excited to expand my knowledge and take on new opportunities. But, most of all, I desire to see more black women like myself dominate in this field."
Pushing through health issues proved a challenge for Peters during her time at Alcorn. She was born with a cleft palate, which led to her having 18 surgeries. Her final two surgeries caused her to withdraw from the University in 2016, as she needed time to recover from her procedures.
"I have had many challenges, one of the biggest battles that I've encountered was not being able to graduate the year I desired because I had two surgeries and had to withdraw from school to recover."
After recovering from her procedures and returning to Alcorn in 2018, Peters continued her path to earning a college education.
"Years later, I am about to be an Alcorn graduate. God kept me going. I found the strength to overcome this obstacle by focusing on the outcome."
Peters never took her eyes off her goal, and she will soon reap the rewards of her hard work.
"Alcorn taught me not to give up on myself. The University also taught me that consistency is key. Graduating will be one of the best feelings I've ever had because it will prove that all my hard work wasn't in vain. Earning a degree is such a blessing."
