Sandra Davis wins 2019 Humanities Teacher Award
Each year, the Department of Social Work honors one of its professors for their commitment to excellence at Alcorn State University. Sandra Davis, an instructor of social work and the coordinator of Field Education, was this year’s selection to be recognized for her efforts in the classroom.
Davis received the 2019 Humanities Teacher Award Thursday, Feb. 14. As part of her award presentation, Davis gave a lecture titled, “Global Perspective on Social Work Practice,” in the J. D. Boyd Library Medgar Evers Auditorium.
The news was a surprise to Davis. She said that being named this year’s honoree almost left her speechless.
“Being selected as the recipient for this prestigious award by so many awesome professors make me feel ecstatic and honored to be a faculty member at Alcorn,” said Davis. “It is wonderful to know that hard work, dedication, and endless efforts to educate and prepare my students for their chosen careers have not gone unnoticed.”
Receiving the award motivates Davis to be even stronger at preparing her students to pursue their careers.
“Being an instructor is fulfilling, and I feel that the quality of education can have an overall impact on an individual’s quality of life.”
Davis’ mother, Shirley Mae Dembly played a key role in encouraging her to strive for the best. That motivation is what keeps Davis going strong in her career.
“She motivated me not only to graduate but also to continue my education and follow my dream of becoming a teacher.”
