Alcorn State University has opened the application process for its Upward Bound program’s fall and spring academic phases from September to May.

Applications are due Friday, September 15.

The Upward Bound Program aims to prepare its participants for college entrance by improving their knowledge in basic academic subjects such as mathematics, English, science, reading, and foreign language (French and/or Spanish). Group and individual counseling sessions are provided to assist in improving the participant’s self-image and self-confidence.

“We are excited about the prospect of having your scholars join Upward Bound and look forward to helping them realize their full potential,” said Kenneth White, interim director of Upward Bound. “Together, we can create a brighter future through education.”

Participants must be enrolled in high schools from Adams, Claiborne, Jefferson, and Wilkinson Counties, low-income, or first-generation college students. Students must have completed 8th grade, be between ages 13 and 19, and need academic support.

There is no cost to the student. The program provides room and board, books, and instructional materials during the summer and/or academic phase. Additionally, each student receives a stipend for active, regular participation during the academic phase on scheduled Saturdays and weekly during the six-week Summer Phase.

Because of the program’s preparation of college-ready students, two participants of Upward Bound have enrolled to complete their college studies at Alcorn.

“We’ve recently had two of our Upward Bound graduates become Bridge Students for our Summer Phase and are now enrolled at Alcorn State University,” said White. “Kelil Watson and Darionce Dotson have worked diligently during their tenure in Upward Bound and decided to give back to the Program this Summer by serving as Bridge students while simultaneously taking classes at Alcorn for summer school. They are currently enrolled at Alcorn, majoring in Business Accounting and Agribusiness Management.”
