In direct alignment with the mission of the University, the music unit recruits students who are talented and demonstrate the ability for succeeding in the field of music at the undergraduate level. As explained in the Music Student Handbook, students admitted to the music program must satisfy University admission requirements as well as complete a music audition. The following is required for music majors to be admitted into the program:
Instrumental: All prospective instrumental music majors are expected to execute playing a solo composition, all major scales, general technical studies and sight reading. Details for audition requirements for each instrument appear on the Fine Arts Department web site.
Piano: All piano majors are required to perform compositions from two different style periods from memory. Selections must be originally composed for the piano. Memorized works may include selections from Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin. All major scales two hands along with sight reading are expected at audition.
Voice: Candidates are expected to possess a voice of good quality. Potential vocal majors must prepare and sing two works of contrasting styles and languages. Students may select Arias, musical theater, art songs, and or spirituals. Students must also sight read during the audition process.
Students admitted into the program will follow the specific degree plan course outlines provided for their prospective music major. Each curricular degree plan provides course work and experiences for students to further develop and achieve the necessary knowledge and skills required for a practicing musician.
