Helpful Hints

To ensure ease of package pick-up, below are tips for students, faculty, staff and parents when sending, tracking, and receiving packages:

  • Double-check name, address, and the ASU zip code. Always be sure that the name is spelled correctly and is in agreement with departmental information or the student ID card.
  • Check your mailbox daily, especially if you are expecting a package. A Package Received Notification form will be placed in your box when received. If your package does not have a tracking number, the ASUPO is unable to track your package or verify that the specific package has arrived on our premises.
  • Please note that the ASUPO does not have the capacity to refrigerate packages.
  • Here are additional tips for mailing items:
      • Type or machine print all address information.
      • Print clearly and sharply.
      • Omit all punctuation such as periods and commas.
      • Do not overlap address characters.
      • Maintain a uniform left margin.
      • Put either the foreign country (in all capital letters) or the city, state and zip code on the bottom line.
      • Use standard two-letter state abbreviations.

Forwarding Mail

If you are leaving campus for an extended period of time (to study abroad, to take a leave of absence, etc.) you should forward your mail with the ASUPO. Only first class mail and packages are forwarded.

Please create an email address for the post office. Mail forwarding forms can be filled out online. Forwards are effective until you inform the ASUPO of your return to campus.

The date you want your forwarding to begin should be formatted in MM/DD/YYYY. If your address change is permanent, your mail will be forwarded for one year through USPS. If the change is temporary, your mail will be forwarded for four months. For changes to current forwarding address, call the ASUPO at (601) 877-6334 or send us an official United States Post Office change of address card to initiate the change.

Unclaimed Mail

Consistent with United States Postal Service regulations, all mail or packages that are unclaimed fifteen days after delivery may be returned to sender at the discretion of the ASUPO. Our process is as follows:

As necessary, Postal Services’ employees will inspect the mailboxes.

  • Mail that is over ten days old will be removed from the mailboxes.
  • Removed mail will be checked into the Post Office package tracking software.
  • Mail needs to be picked up from the package pick-up window within 15 days.
  • After fifteen days, any mail not picked up from the package pick-up window will be returned to sender as unclaimed.

If there is a legitimate reason that mail or packages cannot be picked up within the 10-day period, the ASUPO must be notified. Further arrangements can then be made to handle the mail or packages. If you have any questions or problems, please let us know at the Postal Services window.

The Alcorn State University Post Office observes all University holidays.
