The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications, and access to state and local government programs and services. The ADA is designed to ensure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. It promotes equal access, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency for individuals with disabilities. The U.S. Department of Labor enforces parts of the ADA related to employment through the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) and collaborates with other agencies to ensure compliance across sectors. For more information, visit: www.dol.gov/agencies/ofccp/ada.

The Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA) is a federal law that prohibits discrimination against protected veterans and requires federal contractors and subcontractors to take affirmative action to employ and advance them in employment. VEVRAA ensures that qualified veterans have equal opportunity in the workplace. It applies to employers doing business with the federal government and is enforced by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) within the U.S. Department of Labor. For more information, visit: www.dol.gov/agencies/ofccp/veterans.

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law that provides eligible employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year for certain family and medical reasons. The FMLA is designed to help employees balance work and family responsibilities by allowing time off for the birth or adoption of a child, caring for a spouse, child, or parent with a serious health condition, the employee’s own serious health condition, and/or certain needs arising from a family member’s military service. During FMLA leave, employees maintain their group health benefits and are entitled to return to the same or an equivalent job. Learn more at: www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/fmla. Search and interview committees play a vital role in the hiring process by ensuring fair, equitable, and thorough evaluation of candidates. These committees help organizations select the most qualified individuals while upholding integrity and equal opportunity throughout the hiring process. Their purpose is to promote inclusive and unbiased hiring practices, review and assess applicant qualifications, conduct interviews and recommend top candidates, and support transparency and consistency in recruitment.

Note: Prior to conducting searches or interviews, please verify that all committee members have completed training and reviewed guidelines.
